Philly Cheesesteak

A delicious, simple way to make Philly Cheesesteaks at home! A hoagie bun full of shaved beef, veggies, gooey cheese, and tons of flavor.

What You Will Need

Shaved beef, onion, green bell pepper, salt, beef broth, A1 sauce, steak seasoning, hoagie buns, melted butter, sliced provolone cheese, and cheez whiz (yep the stuff in the jar, trust me). You’ll need a deep skillet or a pot to cook the beef and veggies in as well as a baking sheet for your sandwiches because we will be using the oven as well.

Step By Step Instructions

Brown 12 oz of shaved beef.

Shaved Beef

Once your shaved beef is cooked, add in sliced onion and green bell pepper. Add as much or as little as you want! Shake in a few dashes of salt and steak seasoning. Now splash in a few splashes of beef broth and A1 sauce. Let your beef and veggies simmer in those juices while we go over and work on the hoagie buns.

Shaved Beef & Veggies

If your hoagie buns aren’t already sliced, go ahead and slice your hoagie buns like a hot dog bun. One side of the hoagie bun should still be intact, but you should be able to open up your bun from the opposite side. Place your hoagie buns on a baking sheet and lightly brush them all over with melted butter. Put them in the oven at 350 degrees for a few minutes to get them slightly toasted. When you take them out of the oven, add sliced provolone cheese on the open-faced buns. See picture below for example!

Provolone Cheese

Now, put the buns back in the oven and broil on high for a few minutes to get that cheese melted and gooey. Once the cheese is melted, bring the buns back out of the oven. Add your beef and vegetable mixture onto the hoagie buns.

Using Tongs for Philly Cheesesteak

Drizzle Cheez Whiz on your Philly Cheesesteaks, trust me.

And that’s it! Enjoy.

Tips & Advice

When transferring your beef to the hoagie buns, use tongs to grab your beef and vegetable mixture so the juice it has been simmering in drains off. You don’t want soggy Philly Cheesesteaks.

Don’t add the Cheez Whiz straight out of the jar. Before you drizzle your Philly Cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz, remove the amount of Cheez Whiz you want and put it in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth. It will be easier to drizzle and taste better to have warm Cheez Whiz.

If you can, buy fresh hoagie buns from the bakery section of your grocery store. Buying freshly baked bread is a small thing you can do to make this taste even better!

If you like mushrooms, add them! I add mushrooms to my husband’s Philly Cheesesteak… I don’t particularly care for them which is why they aren’t included in the recipe.
