Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

Thinly sliced potatoes in a deliciously creamy cheese sauce.

What You Will Need

Potatoes, onion, milk, flour, butter, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and cheddar cheese are all you need for this easy recipe. You will need a sauce pan to make the cheese sauce on the stovetop as well as a baking dish to bake the potatoes in.

Step by Step Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Peel and slice your potatoes into thin slices. Soak your potato slices in a bowl of cold salted water while you work on the cheese sauce.

In a saucepan add milk, flour, butter, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder and heat on low whisking continuously for 5-10 minutes.

Pouring Milk

Gradually add shredded cheddar cheese and whisk until incorporated and sauce is smooth and creamy.

Cheese Sauce

In a casserole dish, add your drained potato slices.

Sliced Potatoes

Add a handful of diced onions onto the potatoes.

Onions on potatoes

Pour cheese sauce over onions and potatoes.

Pouring Cheese Sauce

Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the oven for one hour. Remove aluminum foil and sprinkle on more cheddar cheese. Put the dish back in the oven and broil a few minutes on high.

Season individual servings with more salt and black pepper. Enjoy!

Tips & Advice

I highly recommend buying a block of cheddar cheese and shredding the cheese yourself rather than buying pre-shredded cheese. This is a very simple thing you can do to make this taste even better!

You can easily add cooked diced ham to this recipe! Just add them gradually throughout as you add your raw potatoes to the baking dish.

An easy complete meal idea for you: serve these cheesy scalloped potatoes with baked pork chops and a green veggie (such as peas).

I use about 1/4 of an onion because I am the only person that cares for onions in my household. Use as much or as little onion as you would like!

Oh man, this sounds and looks so good my mouth is watering!! Can you use cornstarch instead of flour to make the cheese sauce so this is gluten-free?

    1. Thank you MaryJo! I haven’t tried substituting cornstarch for flour but I don’t envision that being a problem! Cornstarch is thicker than flour so I would suggest only adding 1 1/2 TBSP of cornstarch. Let me know if you try this substitute and how it works out for you!
