A delicious and simple Halloween cake for people with zero baking skills.

What You Will Need

Red velvet cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, heavy whipping cream, orange food coloring, Halloween Peeps, edible color spray, edible glitter dust, and toy spiders are the only ingredients and decorations you need for this simple recipe. You will need two 9-inch springform cake pans to bake the cakes in and a mixer.

Step by Step Instructions

Preheat oven to temperature listed on your cake mix instructions.

In a mixing bowl, add your cake mix and other ingredients instructed on the cake mix box (mine called for water, vegetable oil, and eggs).

Mix together until well incorporated. Pour an even amount of cake batter into two springform pans.

Pouring Cake Matter

Bake according to package instructions.

While the cake is baking, prepare your buttercream frosting.

Add the butter to a mixing bowl.

Lay one cake flat on a cake stand. Spread buttercream frosting on top of the first cake.

Cake with frosting

Add your second cake on top of the frosted first cake.

Two Layers Of Cake

Spread the rest of the frosting evenly over the entire cake, including the sides. You should not be able to see any of the red velvet cake.

Tips & Advice

To make this easier, you could buy orange frosting already made. Once you make your own buttercream frosting though, it’s hard to buy the store bought stuff.

What a fun, delicious, and adorable idea that is so easy. I’ve been making my buttercream with heavy whipping cream for years (instead of milk) and it makes a huge difference in the texture and flavor. I use 3 or 4 tablespoons of it and beat the frosting until it’s really fluffy. Super yummy!

    1. Aw thank you so much MaryJo! Once you have made your own buttercream frosting, you can never go back to store-bought. I did it one time… never again. Haha. Good to know the heavy whipping cream is the way to go!
